3 losers from the first preseason game The good news is the Denver Broncos won’t go undefeated in the preseason. In fact, the six-game winning streak in exhibition games is over. The first preseason game looked like the first preseason game, with some winners and losers. Here are some of them from the Broncos 42-28 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Winners Royce Freeman Denver’s rookie running back carried over his strong play in training camp to his first game. His 23-yard touchdown run was impressive. Some felt Freeman should have been No. 1 on the running back depth chart coming into Saturday’s game, he should after this performance.Jeff Holland As if the Broncos needed anymore pass rushers on defense, but Holland showing like he did makes the Orange Rush even more daunting (rock this vintage shirt with a modern twist). Remember: He was undrafted. Holland’s strength and burst will be hard to block, especially if he’s on the field with the likes of Von Miller and Bradley Chubb.Marquette King Denver’s new punter, and his leg, definitely got some work. While the offense left a lot to be desired, to say the least, the good news is the Broncos have a punter. The more he gets acclimated to kicking at altitude, the better he’ll get. Isaiah McKenzie For his wow moment of the night, a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown. It may not be enough for some to forgive his fumbles Womens Bradley Chubb Jersey , but it’s a great way to warm them up; especially if he’s consistent.LosersPaxton Lynch The time has come for John Elway and the organization to move on. How Lynch has looked at camp, he looked against the Vikings— awful, and that’s being kind. He’s a wreck mentally and he has no confidence. For those holding out hope he would “get it,” it won’t happen; at least not in Denver. Better to cut bait, admit the mistake, and move on.First-team defense/offenseThis is the most disappointing aspect of the preseason opener for the Broncos. Both looked lethargic and ill-prepared. That is a 180 to what the team has looked like in practice. It’s too early to panic given this was the first preseason game, and at least for the defense Miller didn’t even play. But it is something to keep an eye on as the preseason moves forward.Devontae Booker This is a combination of how he looked on the field, but also Freeman. Booker looked and played like the same running back ... one who doesn’t trust himself, lacks vision and runs with happy feet. Yes, Booker only had two carries but that was enough.DeMarcus Walker set to make a larger impact in second season with Broncos In the 2017 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos selected ACC Defensive Player of the Year and prolific sack artist DeMarcus Walker out of Florida State in the second round. It was a pick many fans across Broncos Country were excited about — with many hoping he could make an impact and bolster the franchise’s pass rush in his rookie year.Name: DeMarcus WalkerPosition: Defensive EndHeight: 6’4”Weight: 285Age: 23Experience: 2nd seasonCollege: Florida StateUnfortunately, that never happened and his rookie season was essentially wasted when he was moved to outside linebacker in lieu of the handful of injuries and lack of depth the Broncos had at the position. In ten games Authentic Phillip Lindsay Jersey , Walker played only ten percent of the team’s total defensive snaps. In that limited action, he registered just seven tackles and one sack. It was a big let down for the former Seminole, but he is excited to be back where he should have been all along and hopes to a make an impact in his second year. The GoodWalker is known for being a high effort player with tremendous production. He was one of collegiate football’s most productive pass rushers (26.5 sacks) in his final two years at Florida State, often racking up sacks when winning one-on-one battles when moving inside to rush. He was regarded as a team leader and someone who could be relied on — playing nearly 90 percent of the Seminoles’ defensive snaps as a senior. He has a great first step and a quality swim move that helps him get past offensive lineman en-route to the quarterback. The BadEven though he had impeccable production in college, Walker is only an average athlete for the position and have difficulty getting a consistent rush from the outside in the pros. He struggled on a handful of occasions in the team’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings in respect to taking on double teams and was pushed back at the point of attack in the run game. May not be ever be a full-time defensive end in the league, and will likely earn his keep by being able to win one-on-one battles when he kicks inside to rush the passer.QuotableStatusAfter having his rookie season essentially wasted with a questionable move to outside linebacker, Walker is now back to where he should have been all last season at defensive end. He has been rotating first-team reps at the starting end spot opposite of veteran Derek Wolfe. I believe he will see a good amount of snaps in his second season at the position, but expect him to make most of his presence known when slides inside and generate a pass rush on the interior, just like he did while he was at Florida State.
